The UNIS-UN Committee is a student-run organization which plans and hosts an annual
conference held on the first Thursday and Friday of every March in the General Assembly
Hall of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City. The aim of our conference
is to provide an educationally enlightening and enriching experience for our peers
from all over the world. We believe that the international aspect of our conference
is crucial in giving students better global perspectives; to that end we make sure
to invite participants from all 7 continents (yes, we even have a teacher who lived
in Antarctica). In the near future our website will be fully functional (as active
full-time students we must incorporate everything bit by bit into our schedules)
and hopefully whether you are a visiting student or advisor, UNIS student or teacher,
or a UNIS-UN alumnus, our website will meet your needs and satisfy your curiosity.
The Committee itself consists of many individual commissions—Visiting Schools,
Editing, Speakers, Debate, Technology, Finance & Resources, Logistics and Ushers—which
work cohesively to prepare and conduct various aspects of the conference. Each commission
is led by two to three coordinators and these commission heads form a coordinating
team within the Organizing Committee known as the Executive Committee (EX-COMM).
Preparations for the conference begin nearly a year in advance, and include: finding
and researching a contemporary global issue, compiling a list of speakers, inviting
several hundred students from many national and international schools and arranging
for most of their accommodations with UNIS families. The work expands to organizing
the UNIS and GA (General Assembly) debates (both held on separate occasions), selecting
six students to partake in the conference Student Panel, and compiling a Working
Paper of articles on the conference topic written by members of the UNIS-UN Organizing
Committee and then edited by the UNIS-UN Editing Commission. Past conference titles
include: The Food Crisis: A Global Challenge (2009), The Pursuit of Energy: A Catalyst
To Conflict (2008), Global Warming: Confronting the Crisis (2007), 30 Years of UNIS-UN:
The Role of the Corporation in Today's World (2006), and Global Health: Rights and
Responsibilities in the 21st Century (2005). Previous speakers include
the Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Former Secretary-General
of the United Nations H.E. Mr. Kofi Annan, Internationally-acclaimed Global Warming
Activist Laurie David, Independent Documentary Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, Musician,
Actor, and Social Activist Harry Belafonte, actress and activist Vanessa Redgrave
and many, many more.
